Global MedTech News | PMDA GenAI Review, Peripheral EBUS & Surgical Robotics (Oct 12–18, 2026)

MedTech news Oct 12–18, 2026: PMDA GenAI review draft, FDA clearances, Olympus peripheral EBUS, U.S. device reimbursement and robotic surgery investment.

The week of October 12–18, 2026 highlighted regulatory expectations for generative-AI devices, AI-enabled monitoring, advanced endoscopy and strategic investment in surgical robotics.

Japan’s PMDA published an English translation of its draft review points for generative-AI medical devices, while Olympus launched a new peripheral EBUS bronchoscope in the United States. U.S. FDA clearances, a reimbursement milestone for non-opioid devices, and several major MedTech and diagnostics transactions rounded out the week.

1. PMDA Publishes English Version of Draft Review Points for Generative-AI Medical Devices

Published:October 14, 2026

PMDA updated its Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) information page to provide an English version of its draft review points for devices incorporating generative AI. This is the release of a translation of an existing draft, not the adoption of a new final regulatory standard.

PMDA publishes review points to clarify testing conditions and evidence relevant to safety and effectiveness. Overseas developers preparing a Japanese submission can use the draft to frame early regulatory questions, while distinguishing consultation materials from binding requirements or finalized guidance.

2. Masimo Receives FDA 510(k) Clearance for AFib Detection on Radius VSM

Published:October 17, 2026

Masimo announced FDA 510(k) clearance for an atrial-fibrillation (AFib) detection feature on Radius VSM. The feature continuously analyzes photoplethysmography (PPG) pulse waveforms to identify rhythms suggestive of AFib and help clinicians decide whether ECG or telemetry assessment is warranted.

Masimo reported sensitivity of 97% and specificity of 100% in company-held validation data; the feature is not a substitute for diagnostic ECG confirmation. Alongside previously cleared AI-enabled opioid-induced respiratory-depression detection, the announcement illustrates how established pulse-oximetry platforms can expand into clinical decision-support functions.

3. Stryker Gains FDA Clearance for Sonopet 3 Ultrasonic Tissue-Removal Platform

Published:October 14, 2026

Stryker announced FDA 510(k) clearance for Sonopet 3, its ultrasonic bone- and soft-tissue removal platform. Developed with extensive surgeon input, the updated system aims to improve control, performance and surgical workflow integration.

New functions include Pulse Control, which regulates hard- and soft-tissue resection, and RISE technology for connected surgical workflows. Initial clinical cases are expected in October, followed by a broader commercial launch later in the fall. The clearance is a product milestone, while the planned rollout is still prospective.

4. Olympus Launches a Slim Peripheral EBUS Bronchoscope in the U.S.

Published:October 15, 2026

Olympus announced the U.S. launch of the BF-UCP190F peripheral endobronchial ultrasound bronchoscope. Its 5.9-mm distal outer diameter is designed to reach segmental and subsegmental airways beyond the central mediastinal targets of traditional EBUS examination.

The device offers 170-degree upward angulation, compatibility with the ViziShot 2 25G EBUS-TBNA needle, and integration with EVIS X1 and EU-ME3. The intended clinical role is real-time ultrasound-guided sampling for lung-cancer diagnosis and staging. This is a U.S. product-launch announcement, not a new Japanese authorization.

5. B. Braun Nerve-Block Needles Qualify for Separate Medicare Payment Under the NOPAIN Act

Published:October 14, 2026 (payment eligibility effective April 30)

B. Braun Medical announced that CMS recognized its Stimuplex Single-Shot Nerve Block Needles as qualifying non-opioid medical devices under the NOPAIN Act. Eligible outpatient surgical uses may receive separate temporary Medicare payment, subject to applicable billing and coverage requirements.

The effective date is April 30, 2026, and the statutory payment provision expires on December 31, 2027 unless extended. This is a reimbursement determination, not a new FDA clearance. The development illustrates why device business cases must account for coding, sites of service, documentation and the duration of payment incentives.

6. Stryker Plans Approximately $400 Million Investment in CMR Surgical and U.S. Versius Sales Alliance

Published:October 12, 2026

Stryker and CMR Surgical announced an alliance centered on the Versius soft-tissue surgical robotics portfolio. Stryker intends to invest approximately $400 million (£300 million) in preferred equity and become the exclusive U.S. sales agent for the platform.

The agreements include an exclusive option to acquire CMR Surgical’s remaining equity in the future. The investment remains subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions; a full acquisition has not occurred. The alliance combines distribution reach, preferred-equity investment and a future acquisition option.

7. Agilent Agrees to Buy Digital Pathology Software Company Proscia for Up to $270 Million

Published:October 13, 2026

Agilent Technologies signed a definitive agreement to acquire Proscia, paying $240 million at closing and potentially up to $30 million more if future performance milestones are met.

Proscia’s Concentriq platform connects pathology scanners, laboratory systems, image analysis and AI. Concentriq AP-Dx, a version intended for pathology diagnosis, already holds FDA 510(k) clearance; the week’s development is the acquisition agreement, not a new clearance. Agilent intends to combine software with its established pathology instruments and reagents. Closing is expected early in Agilent’s fiscal 2027, subject to customary conditions.

8. Labcorp Agrees to Acquire Selected BioReference Laboratory Assets and 4Kscore

Published:October 15, 2026

Labcorp and OPKO Health announced a deal for Labcorp to acquire selected BioReference Health operations for $722 million in cash, subject to upward or downward adjustment based on business revenues at closing, plus up to $150 million in additional payments linked to the 4Kscore Test.

The assets include clinical, women’s-health and urology testing operations, more than 80 patient-service centers, and the already FDA-approved 4Kscore prostate-cancer risk test. The transaction is not yet closed and remains subject to regulatory and other conditions. It underscores the importance of laboratory networks and patient access alongside IVD technology.

9. Terumo and Oxford University Begin Six-Year Organ-Perfusion Research Collaboration

Published:October 14, 2026

Terumo announced a six-year strategic research agreement with the University of Oxford and will provide approximately $9 million to support studies of organ-perfusion technologies.

The collaboration aims to improve perfusion approaches for transplantation and investigate potential applications beyond organ transplantation. It builds on Terumo’s 2025 acquisition of OrganOx. The announcement concerns a research program rather than a new device authorization or commercial launch.

Summary

The week brought together SaMD regulatory transparency, AI-enabled patient monitoring, more capable endoscopy and surgical devices, reimbursement, and large strategic deals.

For international market entry, the PMDA translation is especially relevant. Japan-linked developments from Olympus and Terumo, together with U.S. coverage and acquisition news, reinforce that commercial success depends as much on clinical pathways and distribution infrastructure as on obtaining device clearance.
