MedTech News | FDA AI Rule, Autonomous AI & M&A | Sep 7–13, 2026

Key MedTech news for Sep 7–13, 2026: FDA cardiovascular AI rules, ISO 10993-1:2025, Korea DTx guidance, autonomous heart-failure AI, M&A and Fujifilm MRI AI.

1. FDA Formalizes Class II Regulation for Cardiovascular Machine-Learning Notification Software

Published: September 11, 2026

The FDA formally added cardiovascular machine learning-based notification software to Class II with special controls under 21 CFR 870.2380.

The rule establishes expectations around clinical performance, relevant patient subgroups, potential model bias, software verification and validation, human factors, and labeling.

For developers of cardiovascular AI and SaMD, it provides a useful example of how the FDA expects machine-learning products used for screening and referral to be clinically validated.

2. FDA Discusses Biocompatibility Risk Assessment Under ISO 10993-1:2025

Date: September 9, 2026

The FDA held an industry Town Hall on biocompatibility risk assessment, focusing on recent updates to ISO 10993-1:2025.

The agency emphasized a risk-based and least-burdensome approach rather than automatically requiring additional testing for every biological endpoint.

For manufacturers introducing new materials or material changes, the scientific justification for the testing strategy is becoming as important as the test results themselves.

3. Korea's MFDS Revises Clinical-Trial Guidance for Digital Therapeutics

Published: September 10, 2026

South Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety revised its clinical-trial protocol guidance for digital therapeutic devices.

Disease-specific guidance covers areas including panic disorder, depression, ADHD, alcohol-use disorder and eating disorders.

Korea is moving beyond dedicated legislation for digital medical products toward more detailed clinical evidence frameworks for individual therapeutic indications.

4. GE HealthCare Introduces StarGuide GX 4D SPECT/CT

Published: September 8, 2026

GE HealthCare announced StarGuide GX, a digital 4D CZT SPECT/CT platform.

The system has received CE marking and remains 510(k) pending in the United States.

Designed for the theranostics era, the platform supports a broad range of energy levels, including investigational alpha emitters.

The product reflects the growing role of molecular-imaging systems not only in diagnosis but also in treatment planning, dosimetry and response assessment.

5. Tempus Receives Up to $9.5 Million to Develop Autonomous AI for Heart Failure

Published: September 9, 2026

Tempus AI was selected for up to $9.5 million in funding under ARPA-H's ADVOCATE program to develop an autonomous clinical AI agent for heart-failure care.

Rather than functioning solely as decision support, the system is intended to operate as an extension of the clinical team and help deliver and coordinate care.

A multicenter prospective study is planned, highlighting the industry's emerging shift from diagnostic AI toward agentic AI that participates more directly in clinical workflows.

6. Axogen Agrees to Acquire BioCircuit Technologies for $200 Million

Published: September 10, 2026

Axogen entered into a definitive agreement to acquire BioCircuit Technologies for $200 million in cash.

BioCircuit's NerveTape is an FDA-cleared technology designed to align, connect and protect transected peripheral nerves without relying on microsutures.

Axogen plans to combine the technology with its existing nerve-repair portfolio and commercial infrastructure to broaden access to peripheral nerve repair.

8. Fujifilm Launches SYNAPSE SAI viewer Ver3.0 in Japan

Published and launched: September 10, 2026

Fujifilm began offering SYNAPSE SAI viewer Ver3.0 in Japan, significantly expanding its AI capabilities for brain MRI.

Its cerebral-aneurysm detection program can identify focal vascular dilations of 2 mm or greater on MRA images without limiting the number of findings.

Fujifilm reports more than a 10% improvement in sensitivity in its reader study.

Automated quantitative measurements and reporting support further demonstrate a move toward embedding AI across the entire radiology workflow.

9. Safety: FDA Classifies Recall of BD Acute Dialysis Trays as Class I

FDA posting date: September 11, 2026

The FDA classified the recall of certain BD acute-dialysis catheter trays, including DuoGlide and Niagara configurations, as Class I.

The issue relates to contaminated sodium-chloride ampoules included in the trays rather than the dialysis catheters themselves.

This was selected as the week's primary safety item while keeping the overall brief focused on regulatory, technology and business developments.

Summary

This week highlighted the transition of AI-enabled medical devices from a broad innovation category into more clearly defined regulatory and clinical-evidence frameworks.

At the same time, Tempus is moving toward autonomous clinical AI, GE HealthCare is expanding its theranostics platform, and acquisitions by Axogen and IPG Photonics show continued strategic investment in specialized device markets.

In Japan, Fujifilm's latest MRI AI platform illustrates how AI is increasingly being integrated into complete diagnostic workflows rather than offered as a standalone algorithm.
